The Jersey Battered Women’s Services (JBWS) team, as part of the Morris Family Justice Center in Morris County, NJ, is in the midst of developing the first Camp HOPE America- New Jersey in partnership with Fairview Lake YMCA Camp. As Readiness Grantees, staff from JBWS had the opportunity to experience Camp HOPE California at Lopez Lake in summer 2016.
“It was inspiring to experience first-hand the unique culture of the Camp HOPE environment. Camp HOPE California staff, counselors, and campers embraced the notion that camp is a safe space to be open, silly and engaged. The children had moments in which they radiated with joy and excitement as well as times they overcame and faced challenges. The resiliency of the children was tangible and all of the camp experiences helped them develop a sense of self-worth and confidence. Our Lopez Lake Camp HOPE experience reaffirmed our goal to instill hope in children who have been impacted by trauma and abuse. This camp will help children to create fun childhood memories that will stay in their hearts and have a lasting impact. Our team is looking forward to helping campers, as they define HOPE at Camp HOPE America, “believe in yourself, in others, and in your dreams.” – Amber Szuch- Director, Children’s Program. As well as Nicole Chaladoff- Children’s Counselor and Stephanie Klotz- Professional Training Manager.
